Objective Egypt vice president assassination attempt that killed two bodyguards, sources tell Fox News
A failed assassination attempt on Vice President of Egypt in recent days left two of his bodyguards dead, sources tell Fox News.
This attempt on the life of Omar Suleiman, would mark a disturbing shift in the uprising against the government of President Hosni Mubarak, recently appointed as vice president Suleiman, in an effort to quell the disturbances and, possibly, the line of a successor.
A senior administration official confirmed that Obama's attack occurred shortly after Suleiman was appointed on 29 January. The official described it as an organized attack against the convoy of Suleiman.
Press Secretary White House, Robert Gibbs, declined to address reports of murder when asked by Fox News.
"I do not go into that question ..." said Gibbs.
On Saturday, Egyptian security sources denied the reports of the attempted murder, Reuters reported.
U.S.. UU. has condemned the violence that has erupted in the streets of Cairo in recent days in clashes between groups for and against the government. Several have been killed and hundreds injured in the chaos, and journalists and human rights activists have also been targeted.
Mubarak, who faces intense pressure to resign, announced earlier this week that would end his reign of almost 30 years, but only after the September elections. That did little to appease the protesters, who have demanded his immediate dismissal
.
The post of vice president was empty when Mubarak, Suleiman tapped for the job after the protests began. Suleiman would stand to take over as interim leader of Egypt in some of the proposals reportedly being considered for an accelerated political transition.
Senior source at Fox News expressed surprise that the news of the assassination attempt was a breaking point, "because it is the transition plan ... or at least one of them to the Egyptians."
However, Suleiman also comes with an image problem of his own after having served as head of the intelligence forces of Mubarak.
As intelligence chief, was known for his strong-arm tactics and was seen as one of the leaders of the region's most feared and revered intelligence.
It is not immediately clear who was behind the assassination attempt.
